Paul Steel wants to make classic pop drenched in so much magic the BBC feel compelled to bring back Top Of The Pops. Paul's favourite music is The Beach Boys, Super Furry Animals and Gershwin. Paul writes songs about heroes in comas, the religion-like cult of the emo kid and imaginary friends. Paul likes Monster Munch, The Chuckle Brothers and making brain-bonkering psychedelic pop masterpieces. Paul has a bionic thumb. Born and raised in Worthing and now living in the cultural oasis of Brighton, Paul Steel worked the low wage wasteland of crappy jobs, using the free time in between shifts to produce music in his bedroom. The first fruit of this labour was the splendidly cracked sounds of his mini-album 'April & I', an album about a young boy inventing an imaginary friend to help him through the tough times. This summer sees the release of Paul's first full length, an album again comitted to tape in his bedroom and but then mixed with Tony Hoffer (Beck,†The Kooks, The Fratellis, Supergrass, Granddaddy) in LA. The result is an endearing blast of homegrown, spaced-out pop in the grand, eclectic tradition of Super Furry Animals, Elvis Costello and The Beach Boys. It's an album that guarantees you'll be bathed in glorious warm rays of happiness this summer. Your permanent smile is just the click of a play button away... |
